By ANNIE FOWLER, The CUJ

PENDLETON — Pendleton knocked off 3A powerhouse Burns on Tuesday, Sept. 10, handing the Hilanders a 25-22, 2-15, 15-25, 25-22, 16-14 loss at Warberg Court.

“The girls showed so much resilience and heart tonight,” Pendleton coach Jodi Primus said. “To win a big first set, and then struggle as bad as we did in the second set like that and then come back was a huge mental win.”

Josie Jenness handed out 28 assists for the Bucks (4-2), while Nicole Somnis had 14 kills. Lexie Willman chipped in six kills, Avery Brown had three solo blocks, Nessa Neveau had 13 digs and four aces, and Finley Evans had 23 digs.

“The determination to win tonight is what made the difference,” Primus said. “These girls didn’t give up and kept on fighting, and for that I am so proud.”

It was the first loss for the Hilanders this season, and the first time they had lost a set.

Burns (8-1) toppled La Grande 25-19, 25-7, 25-21 before taking on the Bucks.

WESTON-MCEWEN 3, IONE/ARLINGTON 0 — The TigerScots improved to 6-4 on the season with a 25-23, 25-17, 25-18 home win over the 1A Cardinals (5-3).

“We played very well tonight,” W-M coach Marie Cain said. “It was so much fun to watch. We started out slow, dining ourselves quite the hole to climb out of, but we did just that. One point at a time, and we were disciplined to pull out the W in the first set. From then on, closed out sets two and three.”

Delaynee Angell led the TigerScots with nine kills and two aces, while Charlotte Hansell added eight kills, two aces and 10 digs, Bre Ward seven kills and two blocks, Addy Hall six kills, and Kylie Kramer 12 digs.

“Proud of the perseverance the girls showed tonight, and their teamwork,” Cain said. “Everyone contributed tonight and it showed.”

ECHO 3, PILOT ROCK 2 — The Cougars opened Old Oregon League play with a 15-25, 25-8, 25-22, 17-25, 15-10 home win over the Rockets.
