Bucks beat Bulldogs, remain perfect in GOL play

PENDLETON — Nicole Somnis had 10 kills and Josie Jenness handed out 51 assists as Pendleton made quick work of Baker on Thursday, Oct. 10, for a 25-15, 25-15, 25-19 Greater Oregon League home win.

“The whole team played really well,” Pendleton coach Jodi Primus said. “Everyone contributed great effort and energy. I keep telling the girls, if we are passing well, we are pretty unstoppable because we have a very strong offense. Tonight was a great example of what we can do when we are passing the ball well.”

Finley Evans added 15 digs for the Bucks (11-3 overall), who are atop the GOL standings at 4-0. Sophie Nelson had three block assists and two solo blocks, and Maryn Broker and three aces. Adrianne Demianew had a 2.36/3 serve receive average.

“I was really pleased with how well we served,” Primus said. “Our hitters attacked hard and were smart with ball placement. Josie set super as usual, and led our team so well. Every one of our players had a good game tonight, and I couldn’t be more proud of the positive energy they maintained throughout the whole match.”


“What a game,” Heppner coach Mindy Wilson said. “Marie (Cain, W-M coach) and I both know what these last few games mean, and we both went for it. It was a battle at the net and in the deep court. We had to work out a few kinks.”

Heppner (17-6 overall, 6-1 BMC) trailed 18-8 in the first set, but rallied for a 26-24 win.

“At that moment, I knew these girls were not going to five up,” Wilson said. “They wanted it and went out and got it.”

Trailing by two sets, the TigerScots won sets three and four to even the match, but the Mustangs won the final set.

“Unfortunate loss for us,” Cain said. “Sometimes the outcome isn’t what you are working toward. They played hard, just didn’t quite pull out the win.”

Hallee Hisler led the Mustangs with 16 kills, 28 digs, and six blocks, while Isa Payne had seven kills, 22 digs and three blocks. Ava Gerry added 26 digs, seven kills, 23 assists and two aces, while Maya Payne had 26 digs, 10 kills and 14 assists, Katie Spivey had 52 digs, Avree Lathrop 11 digs and two aces, and Keeley Nairns seven digs.

For the TigerScots (14-7, 4-3), Charlotte Hansell had 10 kills and 16 digs, while Delaynee Angell had eight kills and 14 digs, Mya Bryan 13 digs and five aces, Kylie Kramer 25 digs, and Bri Ward five blocks.


“Kashley had a good night,” Pilot Rock coach Jen Porter said. “She made some really smart plays. It was Senior Night, so it was great to get a win in our last home match.”

Aubrey Corwin added seven digs, 15 assists and five aces for the Rockets (6-15 overall), while Gracee Hemphill had six kills, Kessa Litfin eight digs and five aces, and Coley Gibbs six aces.

Pilot Rock will play Tuesday at Riverside.


Boys soccer

Freshman goalkeeper finished with three saves for Pendleton (1-9 overall.

For Umatilla (4-6-2), Abrahan Garcia finished with three saves.


Girls soccer

“Took us a little bit to get going, but got our feet under us in the second half and played better,” Pendleton coach Kiana Rickman said.

Presley Greenwalt and Ava Jackson each had a goal and an assist for the Bucks, while Chais Surber added a goal, and Halle Pederson had two assists.

Goalkeeper Citlalli Garcia finished with two saves for Pendleton (4-5-1 overall).


Cross-country

Pendleton’s Jack Reynolds turned in a time of 17:37.16 to finish 11th overall in the large-school race at the Live Nation Invitational at the Gorge Amphitheater in Quincy.

The Bucks finished sixth in the team standings with 175 points. Moses Lake won the team title with 59 points, with Shadle Park second with 78.

Also scoring for the Bucks were Autry Robinson (30th, 18:10.86), Khoda Brown (37th, 18:34.23), Eric Baisley (41st, 18:49.65) and Maliki Adams (56th, 19:22.40).

Shadle Park’s Becks Bird won the race with a time of 16:17.49.

McLoughlin and Weston-McEwen competed in the boys’ small-school division, with Weston-McEwen’s Arden Shaul leading the way, placing 20th with a time of 18:47.73.

Also running for the TigerScots were Jose Barahona (78th, 26:12.14), Aiden Aldrich (79th, 26:27.20), and Tristan Weseman (80th, 26:32.25).

For the Pioneers, Alfredo Hernandez (34th, 19:41.35) was the first across the finish line, followed by Damian Newbern (60th, 22:00.59), Fermin Mendoza (62nd, 22:09.17), Matthew Ruder (66th, 22:32.65) and Joshua Ruder (82nd, 29:05.82.

Mac-Hi finished 10th in the team standings with 257 points. Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) won the team title with 50 points, with Timberlake a close second with 52.

Caleb Royce of Timberlake won the race with a time of 16:48.18.

In the girls’ large-school division, Melissa Tune led Pendleton, placing 16th with a time of 21:57.16. Teammate Ella Pozar was right on her tail, placing 17th (21:57.82).

Rounding out the scoring for the Bucks were Evelyn Hays (40th, 23:13.02), Rylee Jackson (51st, 24:55.01) and Genevieve Christiansen (54th, 25:09.88).

Lake City won the team title with 58 points. Pendleton was eighth with 171 points. 

Lake City’s Hazel Kunkel won the race with a time of 19:29.54.

In the small-school race, Weston-McEwen’s Alethea Bond was 29th (25:13.29), while teammate Brynn Brownie was 37th (26:55.78).

Montesano’s Haley Schweppe won the race with a time of 19:08.75.
