Pendleton boys win Valleydale Invite

PORTLAND — Sophomore Jared Pace won the 100 butterfly and was second in the 50 free to lead Pendleton to the boys team title Saturday at the Valleydale Swim Invitational at the Zehntbauer Swimming Pavilion at Lewis & Clark College.

“We had some stellar swims today at Lewis & Clark College against some really tough competition,” Pendleton coach Tony Nelson said. 

The Bucks won the team title with 95 points, with Scappoose second (80) and Riverside third (59) in the field of 11 teams.

Pace turned in a time of 1:09.50 to win the 100 butterfly by 3 1/2 seconds, and swam a 26.06 in the 50 free.

Pace swam the anchor leg on the Bucks’ winning 200 free relay, teaming with Khoda Brown, Farley Hill and Cameron Burt for a time of 1:49.69.

Pendleton’s team of Levi Bonzani, Autry Robinson, Logan Swell and Pace was third in the 200 medley relay with a time of 2:08.21.

Brown, Hill, Burt and Bonzani turned in a time of 4:20.72 to place second in the 400 free relay.

Bonzani also was third in the 100 free (1:00.02), while Sewell (1:23.02) and Burt (1:24.40) finished second and third in the 100 backstroke, Brown was fifth in the 200 freestyle (2:24.97), Bonzani sixth in the 200 IM (2:41.44), and Robinson sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:22.90).

The Pendleton girls finished fourth in the team standings with 70 points. Corbett won the team title with 102 points, with La Grande second with 85.

Avery Pitner led the Bucks, placing fourth in the 100 free with a time of 1:05.82.

Pitner also swam the first leg on the Bucks’ 400 free relay that finished second with a time of 4:26.96. Also on the team were Elizabeth Currin, Maryn Broker and Sophie Nelson.

Pitner, Maddy Gunter, Broker and Nelson teamed up to place second in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:57.95.

Gunter added a fourth-place finish in the 500 free with a time of 6:57.24, and swam the anchor leg on the 200 medley relay team of Jules Gunter, Ella Holtz and Ava Jackson that clocked a 2:30.38 and finished fourth.

Also for the Bucks, Nelson was sixth in the 200 free (2:48.45) and sixth in the 50 free (29.25), Broker was sixth in the 100 butterfly (1:22.21) and sixth in 200 free (2:26.75), and Jackson was sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:32.36).
