Pendleton dominates Baker on the mat

PENDLETON — In the final home match of the season, Pendleton sent their senior wrestlers out with a 50-22 Greater Oregon League dual victory Friday, Feb. 6, at Warberg Court.

“We sent our seniors out the right way,” Pendleton coach Trevor Hancock said. “It was great to see Adam (Urbina) back in the varsity lineup; he just came up short. The Baker kid (Roman Zickgraf) is a decent kid.”

The Bucks put their seven seniors in the lineup, with four of the seven winning their matches.

Cole Roy got the senior movement going with a 15-0 technical fall over Baker’s Braiden Whitebread at 150 pounds, with Vance Nelson following with a pin of Bowen McGuire in 1 minute at 175 to improve to 34-4 on the year.

Kainen Zimmerman picked up a forfeit at 190, and Aidan Perkins finished things off with a pin of Conner Niday at 215.

Urbina lost his match by a 9-7 decision to Zickgraf at 157, while Jefferson steal lost a 9-6 decision to Wyatt Valentine. Daniel Maldonado beat Tugg McQuinn by major decision 14-3.

The Bucks opened the match with three wins in a row, starting with a forfeit at 106, followed by an 18-2 technical fall win by Wesley Browning over Hunter Pierce at 113. Aiden Cox pinned Orlando Rodriguez in 1:02 at 120 to give Pendleton a 17-0 lead.

At 132, Wyatt Taylor beat Luis Rosales 10-1 for a 21-3 lead.

“The young guys stepped up early,” Hancock said. “Aiden looked good tonight, and Wyatt wrestled a great match.”

Pendleton finished the night with a forfeit at 285.

In girls’ action, there were five exhibition matches, with Baker winning three and Pendleton two.

For the Bucks, Tinley Foster pinned Baker’s Zea Young at 130 pounds, while Cheyenne Loomis pinned Sophia Ward at 155.

Baker’s Hailey Duke pinned Pendleton’s Alyce Phelps at 125, while Taryn Niday earned a 19-12 decision over Hazel Case at 130, and  Kate Norton pinned Madison Chase at 170.

The Bucks honored seniors Phelps, Case and Gabby Kennedy before the match.
