CLACKAMAS — Despite its roster being decimated by illness and injury, Pendleton had two champions and placed fifth in the team standings at the Bill Geister Invitational on Saturday at Clackamas High School.
“I’m sure pleased with how the team placed today,” Pendleton coach Trevor Hancock said. “Everyone in the varsity tournament scored points. It was a good week to show us what they’ve got. Super proud of them.”
Eagle Point ran away with the team title with 246.5 points, with Sandy a distant second at 198.5. Pendleton was fifth with 143 points in the 24-team event.
Wesley Browning won the 106-pound title for the Bucks, pinning his first opponent in 59 seconds, followed by three technical falls.
Browning beat Wesley Fitzgerald of Eagle Point 15-0 in the quarterfinals, followed by a 17-1 win over Griffin Farr of McDaniel in the semis.
In the championship match, Browning beat Joshua Kuala of Centennial 19-3.
Aidan Perkins added a title for the Bucks at 190 to improve to 30-5 on the year.
Perkins opened the day with an 11-1 major decision over Joseph Casas of South Salem, then received a medical forfeit in the quarterfinals. In the semis, Perkins registered a 16-1 technical fall over Phillip Price of Woodburn.
In the championship bout, Perkins pinned Mason Alar of Lakeridge in 4:24.
“Aidan wrestled really well in his finals match, and Wesley had a great day too,” Hancock said. “They are looking the best they have all season.”
Also for the Bucks, Hank Roy was fourth at 120, Jack DeGrofft was sixth at 157, and Kaleb Lillie was sixth at 285.
Pendleton’s James wins title
Pendleton’s Harlee James won the 190-pound title at the Bill Geister Invitational on Saturday at Clackamas High School, and the Bucks finished 14th in the teams standings with six wrestlers earning points.
St. Helens won the team title with 210 points, with Eagle Point second with 118.5. Pendleton was 14th with 66 points in the 25-team field.
James opened the tournament with a 29-second pin over Emma Olivarez of Wilsonville, then earned a 5-1 decision over Sophia Zuniga of West Salem in the semifinals.
In the championship match, James recorded a 7-4 decision over Paige Baker of Willamina.
Thiri Dahl placed third at 155, winning her placing match with a 16-4 major decision over Ines Solis of South Salem.
Gabby Kennedy was fourth at 235, as she and Hailey Garcia of Tigard agreed to a double forfeit.
