W-M fends off Stanfield

ATHENA 37, STANFIELD 31 — Second-ranked Weston-McEwen wrapped up the Blue Mountain Conference regular-season title with a 37-31 victory Saturday, Feb. 7, over No. 7 Stanfield.

“A good defensive showing, and we executed on offense when we could in the first half,” Weston-McEwen coach Jeremy Wolf said. “In the second half, both teams came out to compete in the third, then we got caught sleeping in the fourth. Not something you can do against Stanfield. Fortunately, we were able to pick each other up, refocus and execute on both ends down the stretch.”

The TigerScots (21-1 overall, 9-0 BMC) held the Tigers scoreless in the first quarter while taking a 5-0 lead.

The action picked up in the second as Brooklyn Parker scored seven of her 12 points to lead Weston-McEwen on a 12-6 run for a 17-6 lead at the half.

“Weston came out and took it to us in the first half,” Stanfield coach Dan Sharp said. “We struggled to get baskets and being on the attack. Credit to them for being solid.”

Taylor Sperr scored seven points in the third as Stanfield (13-6, 5-3) scored 11 points to pull within 30-17. The Tigers outscored the TigerScots 14-7 in the fourth, but could not get into the win column.

“We woke up late in the third, made a game out of it and eventually tied it up,” Sharp said. “Have some items to be smarter on. Have to play all the quarters to be competitive.”

Addy Hall also had 12 points for the TigerScots, while Lily Langford had five.

Sperr led Stanfield with 12 points, with Kayla Monkus adding six, and three players chipping in four.

Weston-McEwen will close out its BMC schedule Feb. 13 at Heppner.

Stanfield will host Enterprise on Monday and finish the regular season on Friday at Grant Union.
