Local roundup: TigerScots open season with pair of wins

YAKIMA — Lily Langford hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning and drove in four runs for the game as Weston-McEwen opened its season Friday with a 12-3 win over Sunnyside Christian at the Yakima Valley Fastpitch Fury at the Gateway Sports Complex.

Weston-McEwen led 1-0 through two innings, and the Knights tied the score in the bottom of the third. The TigerScots took the lead for good with five runs in the top of the fifth, then added three runs in the six and seventh for a commanding lead.

The Knights added two runs in the seventh, but it didn’t make a difference.

Bre Ward went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs for W-M. She hit a two-run double in the sixth inning.

“A couple of times we rolled the order for the big sticks to come up,” W-M coach Jeff Griggs said. “It was good. It took everyone to get the job done.”

Ward also picked up the win, striking out 13 and walking none.

WESTON-MCEWEN 12, WEST VALLEY JV 3 — Lily Langford went 4-for-4 with two triples and five RBIs as the TigerScots beat the Rams at the Yakima Valley Fastpitch Fury at the Gateway Sports Complex in  Yakima.

Langford, who has committed to Mt. Hood Community College, hit an RBI triple in the first inning, then scored on the throw to give her team a 2-0 lead.

Weston-McEwen added three runs in the second, three in the fifth and four in the sixth to put the game out of reach.

Bre Ward went 2-for-2 with two doubles for the TigerScots, while Hope Berry went 4-for-5 with a double and four RBIs.

Ward, who has signed to play college softball at Corban University, dominated in the circle for Weston-McEwen, throwing a complete game with 14 strikeouts and just two walks. 

“She came out with pretty good control today and kept people off balance,” W-M coach Jeff Griggs said. “We started off with some pretty good heat. She likes the warm weather.”

Quaempts powers Pendleton past Hood River

PENDLETON 7, HOOD RIVER VALLEY 5 — Avery Quaempts went 4-for-4 with two doubles, a triple and two RBIs to lead Pendleton to a 7-5 win over Hood River Valley in its season opener.

The Bucks trailed 3-2 heading into the fifth inning, where they put three runs on the board to take the lead for good.

A double by Quaempts tied the score at 3-3, Kelsi Primus added an RBI single, and later scored on a passed ball for a 5-3 lead.

Pendleton scored one run on an error in the sixth, and finished their scoring in the seventh as Katelyn Boatman scored on a fly out by Cambria Van Nice. Honey Wampler Bryan went 3-for-4 with three doubles and three runs scored for the Eagles. Isa Rivera went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
