TigerScots punch ticket to 2A quarterfinals

ATHENA — Weston-McEwen broke open a close game with a 17-3 run in the second quarter and never looked back in a 64-39 win over Kennedy on Saturday in the first round of the 2A state playoffs.

“Solid offensive start by both teams,” Weston-McEwen coach Jeremy Wolf said. “Fortunately, we got back on track defensively and built upon it for the rest of the game. Kennedy didn’t quit, so we had to ensure we consistently backed each other up when needed.”

The second-ranked TigerScots (23-2) will play Blue Mountain Conference foe Stanfield on March 5 in the quarterfinals at the Pendleton Convention Center. The Trojans ended their season with a 13-14 record.

“On to Pendleton with a well-deserved win by a group of girls who recommitted themselves to each other and are getting healthy at the right time,” Wolf said. “It’s fun to see and be a part of.”

The teams were tied at 16-16 at the end of the first quarter. Addy Hall and Charlotte Hansell each had seven points in the second quarter as Weston-McEwen took a commanding 33-19 lead at the half.

Lily Lanford scored all seven of her points in the third quarter as the TigerScots extended their lead to 51-30.

Weston-McEwen got five points from Reagan Pickard in the fourth quarter as the TigerScots closed out the game with a 13-9 run.

Hall led Weston-McEwen with 21 points, while Hansell added 16 and Brooklyn Parker seven.

Grace Traeger paced the Trojans with 15 points. Brianna Traeger added 13 points, and Jissel Garza had six.
