PORTLAND — Top-ranked Scappoose erased a seven-run deficit, but the No. 10 Bucks held on for a 10-9 nonleague win Tuesday at University of Portland’s Joe Etzel Field.
Pendleton (10-6) led 8-0 in the middle of the fourth inning, only to see the Indians score one in the fourth and put seven runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth to even the score.
After two scoreless innings, the Bucks scored twice in the top of the eighth off a Vance Nelson single to right field.
The Indians (11-5) got one run back in the bottom of the inning as Dexter Olson scored on a wild pitch. With the bases loaded and no outs, Pendleton reliever Reid Furstenberg struck out Matthew Neilson and Taylor Nassimbene, and got Justin Darco to ground out to Nate Driskell at third base.
Driskell and Furstenberg hit triples for the Bucks, while Colin Harrington had a double and two RBIs, and Nelson drove in three runs.
GRANT UNION 17, PILOT ROCK 1 (5) — Owen Parsons drove in three runs, and Weston Suchorski picked up the win, as the Prospectors got off to a hot start for a Blue Mountain Conference home win over the Rockets.
Grant Union (8-3 overall, 5-0 BMC) scored 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning, highlighted by RBI doubles by Jewett Waddel and Titus Hardesty.
The Rockets (6-5, 4-3) scored their one run in the third when Boston McCall scored on a wild pitch. Tate Thacker had Pilot Rock’s lone hit.
Suchorski pitched five innings of one-hit ball, striking out four and walking one.
IRRIGON 14, WESTON-MCEWEN 4 (5) — The Knights broke open a close game with eight runs in the bottom of the fifth inning for a Blue Mountain Conference home win over the TigerScots.
Irrigon (7-4 overall, 3-2 BMC) led 6-4 heading into the bottom of the fifth and started their barrage of runs with one out.
Kodi Maris hit an RBI single to right field, and Erik Covarrubia laid down a bunt to the pitcher that allowed Maris to score for an 8-4 lead.
Covarrubia scored on a passed ball, Bennette Atkins stole home, and Hunter Bowman hit an infield single that put two runners across the plate with a 13-4 lead.
Zach Parton, who had reached base on an error, stole third base and later stole home to give the Knights a 14-4 lead and invite the mercy rule.
Colton Akers hit a solo home run in the fourth inning for Irrigon. Akers has all four of the Knights’ home runs this season.
Maris picked up the win for Irrigon, allowing three runs on five hits. He struck out six and walked none.
Tim Taylor went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored for the TigerScots (1-8,1-6), while Bennett Cavalletto went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Girls tennis
RIVERSIDE 4, WESTON-MCEWEN 0 — The Pirates swept the TigerScots, giving up just six games in the District 4 match in Boardman.
Riverside’s Rebecca Mendoza won the No. 1 singles match with an 8-0 victory over Angelina Erb, while Adalia Chavez tipped Lillian Waldher 8-0 in the No 2 match.
In doubles, Pirates Miriam Patricio and Yuridia Calvillo beat Nelly Barahona and River Dennett 8-0, and Samantha Torres and Melanie Lezama beat Barahona and Dennett 8-6.
Girls golf
BAKER INVITE — Pendleton’s Sophie Nelson shot an 85, with a birdie on hole 8, to take medalist honors Monday at Quail Ridge Golf Course in Baker City.
The Bucks won the team title with a 418. They were the only team with a complete four-person roster.
Jocelyn Bork of Baker was second with a 90, while Tenley Richardson of Burns was third with a 99.
Rounding out the scoring for the Bucks were Emma Ware (6th, 105), Brinley Curtiss (9th, 109) and Kennady Alvarado (13th, 119).
