Local roundup: Pendleton shuts out Mac-Hi

PENDLETON — There’s no place like home.

Pendleton, which played its first four games of the season on the road, broke out the bats at Steve Cary Field on Tuesday to the tune of an 18-0 victory over McLoughlin in three innings.

“We are definitely road warriors this year,” Pendleton coach Tim Cary said. “It’s always nice to play at home. I thought we played well. We were patient at the plate, which sometimes is hard to do when the pitching isn’t what you are used to. We played decent defense and ran the bases well. It was a good game for us.”

The fourth-ranked Bucks (5-0) scored all 18 runs in the first inning off 11 hits. They had the bases loaded in the bottom of the second, but a groundout ended the inning. They did not bat in the bottom of the third.

In the first, Maryn Broker led the way with a three-run double and a two-run single, while Avery Quaempts hit a two-run triple and an RBI triple, and Cambria VanNice had a two-run double.

Pendleton rolled through its lineup twice in the first, with hitters 1-2-3 getting a third at-bat.

Shaylor Fisher pitched a no-hit shutout for the Bucks, striking out four and walking two.

“Shaylor has been very consistent for us,” Cary said. “It’s her first year on varsity. The main thing is to throw strikes and keep the opponent off balance. We’ve had hot bats and have been backing Shaylor up with good defense.”

Makenzee Smith took the loss for the Pioneers (0-3), allowing 18 runs on 12 hits. She struck out one and walked 10.

“Mac-Hi has a great coach and a good group of players,” Cary said. “They are down a little down this year.”

The Pioneers lost ace pitcher Aisling Giguiere to a season-ending injury before the season started.

Pendleton will play No. 2 Astoria at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Estacada High School.

“We have some very, very tough games coming up,” Cary said. “We will see some really good hitting teams and pitchers. It will show us where we’re at, or not.”
