BAKER CITY — Pendleton’s John Thatcher will have a busy 4A state track meet after qualifying in three events Friday at the Greater Oregon League Championships at Baker High School.
The 4A state meet is May 29-20 at Hayward Field in Eugene.
Thatcher won the 400 meters with a time of 49.63, nearly one second in front of the No. 2 runner.
Thatcher then joined Quinn Kennedy, Ben Hopkins and Adam Urbina to win the 4×100 relay in a time of 43.10, more than a second ahead of No. 2 La Grande.
Urbina, Gabe DeGrofft, Hopkins and Thatcher ran a 3:28.70 to win the 4×400 relay. It was their fastest time of the season, and ranks fifth all-time in the school’s record book.
Also headed to state for the Bucks is Easton Dressler in the 800, who ran a PR of 2:08.08.
Senior Jack Reynolds finished third in the 1,500 (4:24.74) and the 3,000 (9:52.12), just missing out on an automatic qualifying spot to state. His times did not meet the qualifying standards.
Also in the distance races, Eagle Edmiston was fourth in the 1,500 (4:34.16), while Farley Hill was fourth in the 3,000 (10:09.74) and fifth in the 1,500 (4:38.15), and Maliki Adams was fourth in the 800 (2:13.36).
In the hurdles, Ryan Simpson was fifth in the 300s (43.98) and sixth in the 110s (18.29).
In the throwing events, Pendleton’s Jaren Yoshioka won the javelin with a PR of 179-9 3/4, with teammate Jubal Hoisington second with a PR of 172-4 3/4. Daylen Ellis was sixth for the Bucks with a toss of 132-2 1/4.
La Grande’s Brogan Hedgepeth won the shot put by a country mile with a mark of 57-8 3/4. The next man was five feet back. Pendleton’s
Elijah Campbell (34-7 3/4), Andrew Edmonds (33-4) and Emmett Gorbett (28-3 1/4) placed sixth, seventh and eighth.
Hedgepeth also won the discus (178-0 1/2), beating the No. 2 man by 43 feet. Ellis (93-3 3/4) and Edmonds (92-6 1/4) placed seventh and eighth.
Pendleton’s William Michael dominated the pole vault event with a winning height of 13-1 3/4, with teammates Zeland Gardner third (11-8 1/2) and Charlie Thompson fifth (10-2 3/4).
The Bucks picked up points in the triple jump as Kennedy (40-6 1/2), Graysen Mead (40-0 3/4) and Cyler Cahill (40-0) placed fourth, fifth and sixth.
In the long jump, Mead was sixth (18-3 3/4) and Cahill eighth (17-2 3/4).
La Grande won the boys’ team title with 97 points, just edging Baker, which had 94. Pendleton compiled 61 points, while Ontario had 10.
In the girls’ meet, Pendleton’s Hazel Case punched her ticket to state in the 100, 200, the 4×100 relay and the long jump, placing second in each event.
Case had a PR of 17-0 1/4 in the long jump, which ranks fifth on the school’s leaderboard.
Case finished second in the 100 with a PR of 12.38, while Baker’s Sammy Gressley ran a sterling 12.04 for the win. Gressley and Case have the top two 4A times in the state.
Case also had a PR of 26.16 in the 200.
In the 4×100, Case joined Citlalli Garcia, Landrie Davis and Genevieve Christiansen to run a time of 50.53 — their fastest time this season.
In the javelin, the Bucks took the top two spots with Braelyn Gunter taking first with a toss of 106-10 1/4, and McKinley Lieuallen was second with a mark of 102-9 1/2. Annaliese Somnis was fourth (82-5 1/4).
Kayle Smith won the pole vault for the Bucks, clearing 9-2 1/4.
Ava Jackson also earned a trip to Eugene, winning the triple jump with a PR of 32-5 3/4, placing second in the high jump with PR of 4-11 1/2, and finishing second in the pole vault with a PR of 8-11 1/2.
The Bucks 4×400 relay team of Jackson, Kyra Metcalf, Brielle Bonzani and Christiansen finished third with a time of 4:43.65.
La Grande ran away with the girls’ team title with 103 points. Baker was second with 80, Pendleton had 68 and Ontario finished with 11.
1A Special District 3 Championships
Echo’s Jude Royer made a clean sweep of the throwing events after winning the shot put and discus on Friday at South Wasco County High School in Maupin.
Royer, who won the javelin on Thursday, won the shot put with a heave of 38 feet, 3 inches, with teammate Kenzie Hendrix second with a PR of 31-8 1/4.
Royer then threw the discus 120 feet to win the event by almost 11 feet. Griswold’s Elyse Flores was third with a PR of 97-8.
Royer’s 30 points went a long way in helping the Cougars to third place in the team standings with 104.5 points. Trout Lake won the team title with 127-5 points, with Dufur second with 116.
Griswold and Sherman tied for fourth with 63 points, while Nixyaawii was 12th (7) and Pilot Rock 13th (4).
Royer and Hendrix were the only Echo athletes to earn automatic berths to the 1A state meet, May 28-29 at Hayward Field in Eugene. There are four at-large berths per event that will be decided after all district meets have been completed.
The Cougars still piled up the points, with PJ Royer finishing fourth in the 100 (13.53) and fifth in the 400 (1:07.30), while Jacee James was third in the 1,500 (6:06.30), fourth in the pole vault (5-7), fifth in the 3,000 (13:06.32) and sixth in the 100 hurdles (21.36).
Cheyenne Skillman was third in the high jump (4-8 3/4) and the pole vault (6-6 3/4), Jaycee Campbell was sixth in the 300 hurdles (58.45), and Brooklynn Wade was fifth in the triple jump (32-1).
In the 4×100, the team of Payton Widener, Shelby Blanchet, Campbell and PJ Royer was fourth with a time of 53.58. The same quartet was fourth in the 4×400 in a time of 4:37.24.
Griswold’s Kallie Joe Campbell punched her ticket to state in three events. She was second in the 100 (13.17), second in the 400 with a PR of 1:03.54, and third in the triple jump (33-5 1/4).
The Grizzlies’ 4×100 relay team of Ellie Morris, Campbell, Kaylee Rand and Amy Weidert finished second with a time of 51.82 — their fastest of the season.
Weidert won the long jump on Thursday, breaking a 52-year-old school record with a leap of 17 feet. The old record of 16-11 3/4 was set in 1974 by Becky Raymond.
Weidert also was third in the 100 (13.25), while Morris was sixth in the triple jump (31-9), Rand was fifth in the 200 (29.06), and Kate Hill was fifth in the 300 hurdles (55.96).
Emma Star-Nez earned all seven of Nixyaawii’s points, placing fifth in the 1,500 (6:08.17) and sixth in the 800 (3:01.09).
Pilot Rock picked up all of its points in the discus as Paige Hansen placed sixth (85-10) and Aubrey Corwin was eighth (82-6).
In the boys’ meet, Pilot Rock’s Sun Schimmel was a three-event winner. He won the 100 in a time of 11.30, the 200 with a PR of 23.07, and the 800 in a time of 2:06.63.
Schimmel earned 30 of the Rockets’ 42 points, and they placed 10th in the team standings.
Schimmel and Jude Royer were named the male and female athletes of the meet.
Horizon Christian won the boys’ team title with 96 points, followed by Lyle-Wishram (61) and South Wasco County (59). Ione was sixth with 51 points, while Griswold tied for eighth with Trout Lake (44), and Echo was 14th (3).
After winning the high jump and the long jump on Thursday, Ione’s Kyan Webb was third in the 100 (11.75).
Leo Lemus also booked his ticket to state for the Cardinals, winning the 400 with a time of 53.52. He was also fifth in the 200 (24.37).
Also for the Cardinals, Carter Eynetich was third in the discus (120-4) and fourth in the shot put (44-2).
Griswold’s Noah Walker is headed to Eugene after placing second in the 110 hurdles with a PR of 15.73, and second in the 300 hurdles with a PR of 40.48.
Walker also ran the anchor leg on the Grizzlies’ winning 4×100 relay team (45.48) that also included Lyle Peck, Doug Cornelius and Cameron Makin.
Makin also was third in the triple jump (38-7), while Cornelius was fifth in the discus (117-9), and Peck sixth in the 200 (24.38) and seventh in the 100 (12.05).
Echo’s points came from its 4×100 relay team of Brayden Cortaberria, Chance Bush, Gunnar Harwood and Owen Stafford, which placed sixth (49.95).
Tennis
In singles action, Pendleton’s Noemi Alvarez-Barroso is in the consolation semifinals of the 4A/3A/2A/1A state championships in Corvallis. She lost her first match 6-3, 6-7, 9-5, 6-3 to Hailey Clayton of Oregon Episcopal. In the consolation bracket, Alvarez-Barroso topped Catalina Valencia of Irrigon 8-3.
McKinley Moore of Pendleton lost her first match 6-3, 6-4 to Nina Rinard of Riverdale, then lost an 8-6 consolation match to Cypress Toman of Madras.
