Local roundup: Wallowa Valley beats TigerScots in opener

ATHENA — Wallowa Valley took advantage of five Weston-McEwen errors, and Case Melville and Isaac Beachy each drove in two runs for a 14-3 victory Tuesday over the TigerScots in the season opener for both teams.

Wallowa Valley opened the game with two runs in the top of the first, but saw its lead disappear as Weston-McEwen put three runs on the board in the bottom of the inning.

Tim Taylor got Weston-McEwen on the board with an RBI double that put A Romero across the plate. Quentin Sinclair followed with a groundout that scored Bennett Cavalletto to tie the score at 2-2.

The TigerScots took a 3-2 lead as Taylor scored on a passed ball.

 Wallowa Valley responded with seven runs in the top of the third, then added one more run in the fifth for good measure.

In the seven-run onslaught, Beachy hit a two-run double and three runs scored on passed balls. 

Caleb Taggart led Wallowa Valley, going 3-for-4 with an RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases, while Kooper Grover picked up the win on the mound.

Taylor took the loss for Weston-McEwen, allowing 12 runs on six hits over 2 2/3 innings.

Aidenn Mahaffey accounted for the TigerScots’  other hit, a single in the fourth inning. Weston-McEwen is back in action on March 31 at Cove/Union for a Special District 7 game.

Pendleton splits games with Wa-Hi

PENDLETON 15, WALLA WALLA 11 — Pendleton rallied with seven runs in the top of the eighth inning to beat Walla Walla 15-11 on Tuesday in the second game of their doubleheader to salvage a split.

With the game tied at 8-8 after seven innings, Nate Driskell got the ball rolling for Pendleton with a lead-off double followed by Reid Furstenberg with an RBI single to take a 9-8 lead.

From there, the Bucks scored on a hit batter, two bases-loaded walks, an RBI single by Colin Harrington, and two wild pitches.

Wa-Hi got three runs back in the bottom of the inning, but could not catch the Bucks.

Kreg Krol had a triple and drove in three runs for Pendleton (1-2), while Furstenberg went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored and Eli Smidt had two RBIs.

Michael Spaulding and Braeden McCauley each had two hits for Wa-Hi, while Trey McCauley had three stolen bases.

In the opener, the Blue Devils scored the winning run on an error in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 9-8 win.

Pendleton led 5-4 after three innings, but the Blue Devils tied the score at 5-5 in the fourth. Both teams scored three runs in the sixth for an 8-8 game.

Driskell went 2-for-4 for the Bucks with two RBIs, while Harrington was 2-for-4 with one RBI.

The Bucks will host Hood River Valley on Friday.

Rockets, Pirates split games

RIVERSIDE 15, PILOT ROCK 5 — Riverside scored 14 unanswered runs over the first four innings to sail away with a 15-5 victory over Pilot Rock on Tuesday in the second game of a doubleheader to salvage a split.

Pilot Rock would score five runs in the top of the fifth, but it wouldn’t be enough.

Riverside’s pitching staff combined for 10 strikeouts and gave up just three hits in the win.

At the plate, the Pirates had just four hits, but took advantage of 15 walks and eight hit batters.

Roman Joines, Cougar Philippi, Payton Thomas and Eli Nunez all hit singles for Riverside, while Cooper Cemore had two RBIs and scored three times.

Lucas Thieme, Tate Thacker and Boston McCall all had hits for the Rockets.

In the opener, Gage Williams and Thacker combined for a no-hitter and 10 strikeouts as the Rockets picked up a 6-4 win. The game was tied 4-4 after five innings, but Pilot Rock put two runs on the board in the top of the sixth, then held on for the win. McCall drove in a run for a 5-4 lead, then stole home for what would be the final score.
