WESTON-MCEWEN 16-15, IRRIGN 1-0 — The top-ranked TigerScots wrapped up Blue Mountain Conference play with a sweep of the Knights at Athena Memorial Ballpark.

“These were important games as we finished league strong today,” said W-M coach Jeff Griggs, whose team will at least share the BMC title. “I was proud of our adjustment to pitching today. Our hitters started to catch up with it around the third or fourth inning of Game 1, making contact up and down the lineup.”

In the first game, the TigerScots (13-2 overall, 9-1 BMC) got two doubles and four RBIs from Bre Ward, who also picked up the win.

Weston-McEwen scored four runs in the first inning, one each in the second and third, then put the game away with a 10-run fourth inning.

In the first, Ward hit an RBI double, Olivia Sargent added a two-run double and Evie Hodgson had an RBI single to take a 4-1 lead.

In the fourth, Reagan Pickard and Lily Langford hit a two-run double, Ward had an RBI double and Hope Berry hit a two-run home run with two outs to invoke the mercy rule. It was Berry’s third home run of the season.

Langford, Berry, Pickard, Sargent and Hallie Burns all had two RBIs. In the circle, Ward threw a one-hitter, striking out 10 and walking none.

For the Knights (3-15, 0-8), Yelena Garibay hit a double in the first inning and later scored on an error.

In the second game, Ward was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle, and finished with four RBIs as the TigerScots ended the game in four innings.

Ward hit a two-run homer in W-M’s five-run first inning, and Berry followed with a solo shot to center field for a 3-0 lead. It was Ward’s seventh home run of the year. The remaining two runs scored on the same error.

In a seven-run third inning, Georgianna Morris hit an RBI single, Langford hit a two-run double, and Ward added an RBI single for an 11-0 lead. Berry and Pickard followed with back-to-back RBI doubles. The other run scored on a passed ball.

An RBI single by Langford and an RBI double by Ward in the fourth ended the game.

Ward also picked up the win, allowing one hit while striking out nine and walking two.

Avaree Pantoja had the lone hit for the Knights. Pantoja also took the loss, allowing 15 runs on 13 hits with four strikeouts and three walks.

“I felt like we met one of our goals today of not standing runners as lots of players collected RBIs when the opportunity arose,” Griggs said. Looking ahead, we need to sharpen our defense as we move toward the home stretch and state. If we stay hungry and build on this good start, we could get some postseason playing time.” Weston-McEwen will play at DeSales for a single game at 4 p.m. Friday.
