BOARDMAN — Riverside turned a 2-1 first-half lead into a 4-1 victory Tuesday night over neighboring Pendleton for its first win of the season.

“We knew we had to get momentum of the game right away and maintain possession as much as possible,” Riverside coach Jose Duenas said.

Freshman Isaac Mendoza put the first goal on the board for the Pirates (1-1-1), and Juan Flores added another first-half goal.

Easton Dresser, off an assist by Miles Johnson, scored in the first half to keep the Bucks (0-2) in the game at the half.

In the second half, the Pirates got goals from Francisco Jimenez and Allan Lozano, while goalie Cristian Espain had a clean sheet.

Hector Magallanes manned the goal for the Pirates in the first half. 

Pendleton keeper Thor Case finished with 16 saves.

THE DALLES 8, PENDLETON 0 — The Riverhawks, one the top teams in the 4A rankings, proved to be a bit much for the visiting Bucks.

“Most of the goals were high or low corners, which are tough shots for any keeper to stop,” Pendleton coach Katherine Ryder said. “Even though we lost, the girls kept their heads held high and came off the field with a great attitude. I’m really proud of how they fought and stayed positive.”

Pendleton rookie goalkeeper Autumn Severe finished with 12 saves.

“Autumn did amazing for her first game out,” Ryder said. “She had some incredible saves and is really starting to figure out how to read the field, shooters and the ball. I’m excited to see where her future as a goalkeeper takes her.”
