Soccer: Bucks win one, lose one

NYSSA — Pendleton clinched the Greater Oregon League title for the second year in a row Tuesday, Oct. 15, with a 25-9, 25-11, 25-12 victory over Ontario at Nyssa High School.

“Tonight was a great opportunity to try out some other lineup options and allow our other two setters some time,” Pendleton coach Jodi Primus said. “Caitlin Cooley and Maryn Broker worked together in a 6-2 offense a couple of sets, and Caitlin ran a 5-1 offense in one set. They both set well. This allowed Josie (Jenness) to have some time as a hitter.”

The Bucks finished the day with a 25-14, 25-13, 25-17 nonleague win over the host Bulldogs.

On the night, Jenness had 18 assists and eight aces, while Finley Evans had 11 digs, Cooley 11 assists, and Broker six assists.

Avery Brown led the attack at the net with 14 kills, while Lexie Willman had nine and Sophie Nelson eight.

“The girls were happy about the wins, especially since we clinched the league title tonight by beating Ontario,” Primus said.

The Bucks (13-4 overall, 5-0 GOL) have one more league match, hosting La Grande on Oct. 24.

“We had a great match to end the regular season,” Pilot Rock coach Jen Porter said. “I was so proud of how they battled all the way through the match. It was definitely a team win. Kessa Litfin was great on defense tonight.”

Litfin had 23 digs, seven aces and 10 assists, while Lillie Holman and Gracee Hemphill each had eight kills. Coley Gibbs added 18 digs, while Abbigail Johnson had seven aces and Aubrey Corwin 13 assists.

Elaina Salgado led the Pirates (5-14) with 13 kills and 10 aces, while Kaylee Christy had 13 kills, Abrianna Lomeli 16 digs and seven kills, and Lexi Covarrubias 53 digs.

“It was a hard-fought battle from both sides of the court,” Riverside coach Bailey Weinke said. “There was a lot of back and forth each set with neither team wanting to give up. I’m really proud of my girls tonight, they played hard. The game may not have turned out in our favor, but it was a really fun one to watch.”

The Rockets finished the season with a 7-15 overall record, and 4-6 in Old Oregon League play.
