Pendleton boys end Baker GOL streak, Baker girls win big

BAKER CITY — It was almost four years to the day that Baker last lost a Greater Oregon League game.

Dillon Elrod had 14 points in the fourth quarter and overtime as Pendleton beat two-time defending state champion Baker 86-82 on Friday, ending the Bulldogs’ 22-game GOL winning streak.

The Bulldogs last lost a GOL game on Feb. 8, 2022, 76-44 to La Grande.

“This is a big win for Pendleton,” Bucks coach Ron Murphy said. “It was a long time coming. It’s my first win over Baker in my four years.”

Pendleton held a three-point lead in the closing seconds of regulation, but a deep-3-pointer by Ezaiah Suarez found the net at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.

Baker scored all nine of its points on three 3-pointers in overtime, while the Bucks got five points from Jubal Hoisington and four from Elrod in a 13-point run that sealed the win.

“Dillon hit a big 3 in overtime and we just grinded it out,” Murphy said. “Everyone is excited, for sure.”

Baker (10-10 overall, 3-1 GOL) opened the game with a 16-13 lead in the first quarter, but the Bucks came back with a 22-18 run in the second for a 35-34 lead at the half.

“We were down 10 in the second quarter,” Murphy said. “Teegan (Herrera) went off for eight straight points to get us back in it.”

Pendleton (10-11, 2-2) outscored the Bulldogs 21-15 in the third for a 56-49 lead. Baker turned the tables in the fourth with 24 points to pull even.

Elrod led the Bucks with 30 points, including six 3-pointers, while Hoisington added 25 and Garret Reinhart 16.

Early on, they were doing a good job of containing Jubal, but he and Garret were able to get things going inside,” Murphy said.

Elias Long led Baker with 32 points, while Suarez had 14 and Ryder Nimmo 12.

Big second half lifts Baker over Pendleton

BAKER CITY 54, PENDLETON 37 – Second-ranked Baker outscored Pendleton 34-18 in the second half to break open a close game and pick up a 54-37 Great Oregon League win Friday night.

“The girls battled pretty well, but Baker went to a higher level in the fourth and we couldn’t match it,” Pendleton coach Tim Foster said. “They got more rebounds and 50-50 balls and were able to build a lead. Our girls worked really hard, but we have to get to the next level to beat the best in 4A.”

Baker (17-4 overall, 3-1 GOL) held a 12-8 lead after the first quarter, with Pendleton pulling with 22-19 at the half.

Molly Rasmussen scored seven of her 20 points in the third quarter as the Bulldogs went on a 16-1- run.

An 18-8 scoring spree by Baker in the fourth helped it secure the win.

Khimora Scott led the Bucks (9-11, 1-3) with 20 points, including four 3-pointers, while Paisley McLaughlin added eight points and Katelyn Boatman six.

“Paisley had another great outing on offense and blocked several shots,” Foster said. “She’s really turned the corner lately with her finishing around the rim. Kim fought hard for the buckets she got. Baker is a tough team, but we are looking forward to seeing them again in the playoffs.”
