LA GRANDE — Pendleton moved to the top of the Greater Oregon League standings with a 16-3 and 12-1 sweep of La Grande on Friday afternoon.
In the opener, Maryn Broker went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs, while Avery Quaempts drove in two runs with a single in the first inning for a 2-1 lead.
Pendleton (12-6 overall, 3-1 GOL) then scored four runs in the second for a comfortable 6-1 lead.
The Bucks put the game out of reach with seven runs in the top of the fifth inning, including two off bases-loaded walks and another off a hit batter.
The Tigers managed 10 hits, but could not get timely hits as they left eight runners stranded on base.
Sophomore Shaylor Fisher earned the win, allowing three runs on 10 hits while striking out three and walking none.
In the second game, freshman Madyson Hernandez, the Bucks’ No. 9 hitter, went 2-for-2 with a double, a triple and four RBIs.
Hernandez hit a three-run triple in Pendleton’s five-run fifth inning and added an RBI double in the third.
Cambria VanNice and Rylee Jackson each went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while Broker drove in two runs.
Broker picked up the win, giving up one run on eight hits while striking out four and walking three.
La Grande, which has allowed 179 runs this season, fell to 1-3 in league play.
DESALES 7, WESTON-MCEWEN 1 — Peyton Benavides allowed five hits and struck out 12 as the Irish handed the TigerScots a nonleague loss in Walla Walla.
DeSales (14-6) opened the scoring with one run in the second inning, then added four in the third and two in the fifth to take a 7-0 lead.
Weston-McEwen (13-3) scored its lone run in the top of the sixth inning as Hope Berry sent a run across the plate with a double to left field.
Berry went 2-for-3 for the TigerScots, while Bre Ward hit a double. Ward took the loss, giving up seven runs on eight hits with 10 strikeouts and four walks.
Baseball
LA GRANDE 9-6, PENDLETON 8-4 — The Tigers are sitting pretty atop the Greater Oregon League standings with a home sweep of the Bucks.
Pendleton (12-8 overall, 4-2 GOL), which had won 10 games in a row, led the entire game before giving up five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Bucks scored twice in the top of the first as Eli Smidt hit a two-run single to left field with two outs.
Pendleton added four more runs in the second, scoring one on an error, the second off an RBI single by Colin Harrington, and Kolt McQuinn set two runs across the plate with a double to left field for a 6-1 lead.
The Bucks added one run in the fourth on a Vance Nelson solo home run, and another in the sixth for an 8-1 lead.
The Tigers (9-7, 6-0) scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull within 8-4, then hung five runs on the board in the bottom of the seventh for the win.
Landon Hood opened the scoring in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run single to make it 8-6. An RBI single by Ryder McIlmoil pulled the Tigers within 8-7, and a two-run double by Darek McIlmoil gave La Grande the win.
Nelson went 2-for-4 with three runs scored for the Bucks, while Keli Spencer was 2-for-4.
Harrington started the game and gave up seven runs on six hits with seven strikeouts before Nelson came on in relief. Nelson gave up two runs on two hits to absorb the loss.
In the second game, the Bucks out-hit the Tigers 12-9, but couldn’t get the timely hits.
Pendleton led 1-0 after the first inning, and 3-1 after three. La Grande scored twice in the fourth to knot the score at 3-3, and added three more in the sixth to help seal the win.
Reid Furstenberg went 3-for-3 for the Bucks, while Nate Driskell was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, Kolt McQuinn was 2-for-4, and Harrington was 2-for-5.
Joe Foster took the loss, allowing three runs on five hits in two innings of work.
SHERMAN 9-25, PILOT ROCK 7-19 — The Rockets slid down the Blue Mountain Conference standings after losing a pair of home games to the Huskies.
In the second game, the Rockets (6-10 overall, 4-8 BMC) jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the first inning, then gave up 18 runs over the next three innings to find themselves trailing 20-9.
Pilot Rock stormed back with six runs in the fifth and four in the sixth to pull within 23-19, but Sherman (7-12, 6-5) scored twice in the top of the seventh to hold on for the win.
Lucas Thieme led the Rockets, going 5-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs. Thieme hit a three-run homer in the first inning. Carter VanHouten had two doubles and three RBIs, while Deacon Gourlie and Logan Gourlie each drove in three runs.
The Pilot Rock pitching staff gave up 13 hits and 13 walks, while the defense committed nine errors.
In the first game, things were a little tighter. The Huskies led 7-6 heading into the seventh, where Sherman scored twice, then held the Rockets to one run.
Thieme and Tate Thacker hit doubles for the Rockets.
Drake Dark and Austin Alsup each drove in two runs for Sherman.
Golf
McLoughlin’s Leo Saldana shot a 78, including birdies on holes 3 and 5, to finish sixth overall at the Buffalo Peak Boys Invite at Buffalo Peak Golf Course in Union.
Coltin Miller of Burns took medalist honors with a 74, followed by Caleb Ludwick of Trinity Lutheran and Sawyer Quinton of Prairie City with matching 76s.
Trinity Lutheran won the team title with a 326, with Baker second at 338. Pendleton was fifth with a 353, while Mac-Hi was sixth with a 361, and Echo/Stanfield was 10th with a 375. Union was 11th with a 407, while Heppner was 13th (427) and Umatilla was 14th (448).
Pilot Rock, Weston-McEwen and Nixyaawii did not field complete teams.
“Today, it was nice to play three of my up-and-coming varsity players,” Pendleton coach Marc Sokoloski said. “Four of the varsity players elected to sit this tournament out after a long week of traveling to tournaments across the state. For the end of the regular season, I think we’ve done what we need to do to prepare ourselves for the foal push going into the state tournament.”
Garret Reinhart led Pendleton, placing eighth with an 80, followed by Bobby Bostwick (T14th, 86), Reuben Butler (T37th, 93) and Brady Claughton (T39th, 94).
“Right now, Garret’s really starting to come into his own the last four tournaments this week,” Sokoloski said. “He’s scored anywhere from a 77 to an 81. That’s some really solid golf. Bobby finished today with an 86, which is a nice sign on the back end of my lineup to start moving the scores downward.”
While Saldana was in the top 10, Preston Wheeler wasn’t far behind, tying for 14th with an 86. Michael Partin (T31st, 91) and Ryan Badgett (67th, 106) finished the scoring for the Pioneers.
Weston-McEwen’s Theo Sprenger was 44th overall with a 98, while teammate David Murphy was 53rd with a 101.
Pilot Rock’s Landon Norton was 51st with a 100.
Evan Minthorn led the Golden Eagles, placing 84th with a 125. Jeffrey Van Pelt was right behind with a 128, and Harley Gone was 93rd with a 138.
