MISSION — Students will be returning to school at Nixyaawii Community School (NCS) on August 24 as the new school year starts off with some big changes.
Two new additions have been made to the staff directory at the school, including Language Arts educator Camilla White and Social Studies Educator Katie Kelm.
White will be replacing former ELA educator Nicci Harrison, who resigned in solidarity with then-math educator Amanda Meyer, who was a part of a Reduction in Force in March. Kelm is the most recent addition to the staffing.
While the previous reduction in force involved the school’s core-studies educator, there is still an array of math classes available to incoming students, taught by existing staff.
NCS Principal Ryan Heinrich said, this year, students will have expanded opportunities in math classes, including financial algebra, consumer math and math 111 offered through online courses.
“Through the collaborative efforts of NCS administration, the NCS School Board, the CTUIR Education Department and the Office of the Executive Director, we are also excited to restore two popular programs — Foods and Drumming — to our course offerings this school year,” Heinrich said.
White previously expressed interest in resurrecting the foods program during her interview process, sparking the incentive to bring back the program.
Heinrich said, with a dedicated team of six full-time teachers and nine total members on staff, as well as guest instructors and language educators, NCS will continue to provide small, relationship-focused learning environments for classes that average 10-12 students.
Important upcoming dates for students and families planning to attend include August 10 for open enrollment and registration, an open house with light refreshments on August 19 from 4-6:00 p.m., a soft-start for incoming freshman on August 20 from 8:00a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and the first day of school for all students kicks-off on August 24.
