Pendleton sweeps Ontario to improve to 8-0 in GOL play

PENDLETON — MJ Gomez had 11 kills and 10 digs to lead Pendleton to a 25-16, 25-18, 25-7 Greater Oregon League win Thursday night over Ontario at Warberg Court.

“Another good win for the Buckaroos,” Pendleton coach Jodi Primus said. “We are trying to finish strong in league and prepare for the playoffs right now. The seniors are trying to enjoy their last run and we are all looking forward to senior night next Tuesday. This is a great group of talented girls. I love being able to sit back and watch them shine, playing a game they  love.”

The 12th-ranked Bucks (16-9 overall, 8-0 GOL), who have not dropped a set in league play, secured the league title for the fourth year in a row Tuesday with their win over La Grande.

Caitlin Cooley added 15 assists, 24 service points with five aces, while Addie Willman had five assists, Olivia Allen three solo blocks and one block assist, Shaylor  Fisher two blocks and one block assist, McKinley Moore eight digs, and McKinley Lieuallen 10 points with two aces.

Pendleton will wrap up GOL play Oct. 27, hosting Baker.

LA GRANDE 7, PENDLETON 0 — The Tigers improved to 8-0 in the Greater Oregon League standings with a win over the Bucks at EOU Community Stadium.

“Unfortunately, the score doesn’t reflect how the girls played,” Pendleton coach Katherine Ryder said. “They played a good game, we just kept getting beat with La Grande’s speed.

Goalkeeper Autumn Severe finished with 17 saves for the Bucks (4-8-1 overall, 2-5-1 GOL).

BAKER 29, PENDLETON 12 — The Bulldogs’ defense turned the Bucks away twice in the fourth quarter as they held on for a Greater Oregon League win on a wet and cold night at the Pendleton Round-Up Grounds.

Cole Sazue completed 8 of 15 passes for 134 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions for the Bucks. He threw a touchdown pass to Brady Claughton.

Tanner Morgan ran for 44 yards on eight carries and one touchdown. Morgan also caught three passes for 41 yards.

Also for the Bucks (1-7 overall, 1-2 GOL), Tucker Kuza completed 15 of 27 passes for 146 yards and one interception, while Aiden Cox had five catches for 47 yards, and Jubal Hoisington caught nine passes for 79 yards.

Defensively, Kolt McQuinn had nine tackles, and Vance Phillips six. Brance McKay and Cox each had an interception.

Cox returned his interception 80 yards for a touchdown, but it was negated by an illegal block.

“We had two touchdowns called back on penalties,” Pendleton coach Erik Davis said. “I would say five big momentum-changing plays were called back by penalties, so the story of beating ourselves continues.”

Baker (6-2, 2-1) trailed in the first quarter, but it didn’t take long for the Bulldogs to right the ship, take control of the game and lock up a playoff berth with the win. Pendleton will finish up GOL play Oct. 30, at The Dalles.
