Rockets fend off Panthers

IMBLER — Carter VanHouten scored eight of his 11 points in the fourth quarter as Pilot Rock held off Imbler 70-60 for an Old Oregon League win Thursday night.

“Good effort from the guys,” Imbler coach Tony Haddock said. “Pilot Rock executed down the street and we didn’t (Carter) VanHouten hit a couple of daggers on us late. It was a really fun high school game to be part of.”

Sun Schimmel scored 11 of his 26 points in the first quarter as the No. 10 Rockets jumped out to a 20-12 lead. Each team had 17 points in the second as Pilot Rock enjoyed a 37-29 lead at the half.

Imbler’s Pedro Rivas had the hot hand in the third, hitting four 3-pointers and had 14 points to lead the Panthers on a 21-14 run to pull within 51-50 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Rockets(15-3) outscored the Panthers 19-10 in the fourth to hold on for the win.

Tate Thacker added 24 points for Pilot Rock, including 14 in the second half.

Imbler (4-12), which saw its three-game win streak end, got a game-high 27 points from Rivas, while Forrest Tyrrell added 17.

Imbler girls cruise to OOL win over Pilot Rock

IMBLER 58, PILOT ROCK 20 — Second-ranked Imbler scored all the points it would need in the first quarter as it cruised to a 58-20 Old Oregon League win Thursday over Pilot Rock.

“Imbler plays very tough defense and we struggled to score tonight,” Pilot Rock coach David Norton said.

Saviah Kunz and London Kunz each scored eight points in the first quarter as Imbler bolted out to a 25-5 lead.

London Kunz added nine more points in the second as the Panthers enjoyed a 40-13 lead at the half.

In the third, Olivia Haddock scored six of her nine points to give Imbler a 53-20 advantage.

The Panthers sat their starters in the fourth, and the reserves stepped in and held the Rockets scoreless.

London Kunz led the Panthers with 17 points, while Saviah Kunza added 15.

Hailey Severe had 10 points for the Rockets (13-5), who saw their three-game win streak come to an end. Paige Hansen and Kessa Litfin each added three points.
