SHERWOOD — Pendleton’s Vance Nelson placed second at 175 pounds, and the Bucks placed 13th overall at the Reser’s Tournament of Champions on Saturday at Sherwood High School.
Thurston won the team title with 256.5 points, with Newberg a distant second with 179.5. Pendleton had 81.5 points.
Nelson pinned his first two opponents to reach the quarterfinals, where he earned a 10-0 major decision over Noel Wood of Glencoe. In the semifinals, Vance posted a 13-4 major decision over Zechariah Halsey of Lebanon to reach the finals.
In the championship match, Leif Larwin of Bend beat Nelson by technical fall, 15-0.
Wesley Browning finished sixth at 106 pounds for the Bucks, losing in the quarterfinals before battling his way back through the consolation round.
Hank Roy was sixth at 113, losing a 6-2 match to Max Bell of West Linn in the quarterfinals before working his way back to a placing match.
Kainen Zimmerman placed sixth at 165, losing his quarterfinal match to Kyle Zajic of Sweet Home by technical fall (19-3) before battling back to the fifth-place match, which he lost to Maclain Cup of West Linn 15-6.
At 190, Aidan Perkins made it to the quarterfinals, where he lost by technical fall to Ryland Walters of Crater. Perkins won his first consolation match, then lost to Jeremiah Steagall of Sweet Home, keeping him from reaching a placing match.
