HELIX — Sun Schimmel and Tate Thacker each had 26 points to lead Pilot Rock to a key 83-51 Old Oregon League win over Griswold.
“We were able to start the game with a high level of energy and let our defense turn into multiple transition points early,” PR coach Tyler Zyph said. “I’m extremely proud of how our team has responded when we have faced adversity.”
The win was key for the No. 9 Rockets (17-4 overall, 5-2 OOL), who are chasing Nixyaawii for the No. 1 berth to the district from the Ladd Division of the OOL.
Pilot Rock jumped out to a 24-8 lead in the first quarter, and stretched its lead to 49-20 at the half behind 22 points from Schimmel and 15 from Thacker.
Thacker had 11 of his points in the third quarter as the Rockets put the game out of reach with a 78-34 lead.
Gage Williams and Tucker Holton each added eight points for Pilot Rock, while Alex Anderson had six.
“We will continue working on starting games with urgency and consistency as we close out the regular season.”
Ethan Harlow led the Grizzlies (2-5, 10-11) with 17 points, while Eli Boatright and Cameron Makin each had eight, and Camp Kinnaman had seven.
Schimmel, who eclipsed the 1,000th-point mark Jan. 29, at Nixyaawii, started the night with 1,012 points and now has 1,038 heading into Thursday’s game at Cove.
The Rockets will honor Schimmel on Friday during their home game with Imbler.
