Grant Union boys win big; Weston-McEwen girls extend win streak

ATHENA — Baryn Huerta and Landyn Beil combined for 41 points to lead No. 10 Grant Union to a 76-33 Blue Mountain Conference win Friday over Weston-McEwen.

Grant Union (13-6 overall, 5-3 BMC) had a modest 14-7 lead after the first quarter, then exploded for 30 points in the second for a 44-17 lead at the half. 

The Prospectors followed up with a 33-16 run in the second half to keep pace with the conference’s top teams.

Tim Taylor paced the TigerScots (3-18, 0-8) with 11 points, while Colby Perkins and Jacob Shurtz each had five.

Beil led GU with 21 points, while Huerta had 20 and Weston Suchorski 12.

No. 2 TigerScots trounce Prospectors

ATHENA 52, GRANT UNION 28 — Charlotte Hansell had 21 points, and No. 2 Weston-McEwen ran its win streak to 12 games with a 52-28 Blue Mountain Conference win Friday night over Grant Union.

Weston-McEwen (20-1 overall, 8-0 BMC) can sew up the conference title by winning one of its last two conference games. The TigerScots host Stanfield on Saturday.

The TigerScots took control of the game in the first quarter with a 10-3 lead. They stretched the lead to 23-15 at the half, then put together a 17-6 run in the third to put the game out of reach.

Addy Hall added 10 points for Weston-McEwen, while Brooklyn Parker and Evelyn Hodgson each had six.

Haven Giffin paced Grant Union (6-13, 3-5) with 10 points, while Gracee Hueckman added eight.
