Local Roundup: Schimmel races to second place at Mustang Invite

HEPPNER — Nixyaawii’s Sun Schimmel ran a 17:4.70 to place second at the Mustang Invite on Thursday afternoon at Thompson Ranch.

Luke Sorenson of The Dalles won the race with a time of 17:02.50, leading the Riverhawks to the team title with 52 points.

Glenwood/Trout Lake finished second with 63 points, and host Heppner took third with 69. Riverside (117) finished fifth, Nixyaawii (148) capped off at sixth and Pilot Rock (170) took seventh.

Landon Norton led the Rockets, placing 23rd with a time of 21:46.80, while Parker Bucher was 34th (24:12.10), Elisha Sanchez 36th (24:32.10), Emmet Hofbauer 40th (29:42.20) and Mason VanHouten 42nd (33:55.50).

For Nixyaawii, Harley Schofield was 29th (22:19), followed by Demetri Brockie (37th, 25:04.30), Joseph Higheagle (41st, 30:24.30) and Delbert Brunoe (43rd, 40:21.60).

In the girls’ race, Heppner’s Brooklyn Hendricks finished third overall with a season-best 20 minutes, 57.90 seconds to lead the Mustangs to a third-place finish.

Trout Lake’s Melody Stock won the race at 20:22.90, while The Dalles won the team title with 28 points. Trout Lake was second with 52, while Heppner was third with 53.

Abigayle Kordatzky led Nixyaawii, finishing 20th (28:26.80), with teammate Ayanna Star 26th (34:49.20).

Pilot Rock’s Paige Hansen was 21st with a time of 29:22.90, while teammate Rylee Bedard was 25th (33:49.20).

GLEN CROSBY INVITE — Pendleton freshman Liam Pennington ran a 17:04.70 to place second at the Glen Crosby Invite at Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario.

The Bucks placed second in the team standings with 54 points. La Grande won the team title with 20 points.

Kaden May of La Grande won the race at 16:45. The next four Tigers placed in the top seven.

Farley Hill finished sixth for Pendleton at 17:39.40, followed by Autry Robinson (12th, 18:10.10), Ryan Simpson (17th, 18:36.40) and AJ Browning (20th, 18:49.80).

In the girls’ race, Pendleton placed its top five runners in the top 20, finishing second (56) in the team race behind La Grande (15).

The Tigers had five of the top six spots in the race, led by Lindsey Brown, who won the race with a time of 19:38.60.

Freshman Isabella Allen led Pendleton, placing ninth with a time of 23:37.50. She was followed by Evelyn Hayes (10th, 24:18), Savaya Cree Medicine-Minthorn (14th, 26:50.30), Ella Holtz (15th, 27:12.80) and Seely Hemphill (18th, 28:47.10).

Volleyball

PENDLETON SWEEPS NYSSA, ONTARIO — The Bucks warmed up for their Greater Oregon League match with Ontario with a 25-10, 25-22, 25-18 nonleague win over Nyssa at Nyssa High School.

“We came off the bus really sluggish today and were a little off, but we snapped out of it in time to play Ontario.” Pendleton coach Jodi Primus said. “We brought much better energy and play, and looked more like ourselves in that match. Everyone contributed to the wins today.”

After Pendleton (13-9 overall, 5-0 GOL) dispatched Nyssa, it beat Ontario 25-7, 25-12, 25-16. The Bucks have not lost a set in five GOL matches.

On the day, McKinley Lieuallen had 39 service points with seven aces, and also had 21 digs with a 2.2/4 serve receive average, while Olivia Allen had 24 points with four aces, seven kills and contributed on 12 blocks, five of which were solo.

McKinley Moore added 23 digs, while Caitlin Cooley had 41 assists and 20 digs, MJ Gomez 28 kills and Kelsi Primus nine kills.

The Bucks are back on the court Oct. 15, at Baker.

WESTON-MCEWEN 3, STANFIELD 0 — The sixth-ranked TigerScots ran their win streak to four matches, and senior Charlotte Hansell had 29 kills, 11 digs and three aces in a 25-19, 25-16, 25-20 Blue Mountain Conference home win over the Tigers.

“It was our Senior Night and the girls took care of business,” W-M coach Marie Cain said. “Proud of their win streak (3-0) this week.”

Hansell, who eclipsed the 1,000 digs threshold Sept. 25 against Grant  Union, now has 1,061. She also is closing in on 1,000 kills with 979.

Addy Hall added 41 assists, 12 digs and four kills for W-M (13-4 overall, 4-2 BMC), while Bree Perkins had 13 digs and three aces, Megan McLouth nine digs, and Kayli Choin four kills, four digs and two blocks.

GRISWOLD 3, PILOT ROCK 0 — The Grizzlies improved to 3-2 in the Old Oregon League standings with a 25-15, 25-23, 25-21 home win over the Rockets.

“Really proud of the girls,” Griswold coach Kaitlyn Fergus said. “They focused and took care of business. Pitt rock served tough, but we were able to handle it and served tough right back.”

Amy Weidert led the Grizzlies (7-10 overall) with eight kills, six blocks and 11 digs, while Kallie Joe Campbell had 11 kills, and Ellis Morris 21 assists.

Gracee Hemphill had seen kills, 12 digs and one block for the Rockets (5-11, 2-4), while Stevee Osborn had six kills, 10 digs and four aces, Kessa Litfin 13 assists, Abbigail Johnson 26 digs and three aces, and Abigail Bensel four kills.

WESTON-MCEWEN 3, IONE/ARLINGTON 0 — The TigerScots had 26 aces as a team in helping them to a 25-10, 25-11, 25-14 nonleague home win over the Cardinals on Wednesday night.

“We served well tonight,” W-M coach Marie Cain said. “I saw aggressive play from several players tonight, which is great being able to move the ball around on offense.”

Charlotte Hansell led the TigerScots with 14 kills and 10 digs, while Addy Hall had 28 assists, Kayli Choin five kills and two blocks, Bree Perkins 14 digs, Eloise Hansell seven kills and five digs, and Megan McLouth five digs.

Girls soccer

LA GRANDE 2, PENDLETON 0 — The Bucks dropped to 1-3-1 in Greater Oregon League play with a home loss to the ninth-ranked Tigers.

“It was a hard-fought game,” Pendleton coach Katherine Ryder said. “We had several girls on the injury list, or who got injured in the first half of the game, and that affected how we played today.”

In goal, Autumn Severe had five saves for the Bucks (3-6-1 overall), and Sophia Estrada had eight. They each allowed one goal.

Boys soccer

LA GRANDE 3, PENDLETON 1 — The Tigers picked up their first Greater Oregon League win with a home win over the Bucks.

Thor Case finished with five saves for Pendleton (1-8-1 overall, 0-4-1 GOL), which has dropped five games in a row.
