PENDLETON — Pendleton picked up its first win of the season with a 2-1 victory Tuesday over neighboring Umatilla.
“I am extremely proud of our boys and their dedication to improving every single day,” Pendleton coach Kade Clark said. “We came into this game with one goal, and that was to walk away with the win. We achieved just that.”
After a scoreless first half, the Bucks (1-2) got on the board 20 minutes into the second half as Antony Tarapues scored off an assist by Liam Clark.
Five minutes later, Umatilla’s Jaden Armenta tied the score.
Miles Johnson sent a rocket of a shot past Vikings’ goalkeeper Miguel Mendez to seal the win for the Bucks.
It was a major team win,” Clark said. “Each and every one of our boys played a key role in this game and I can’t wait to see what this team is able to accomplish this season. Excited to start league play next week against Ontario.”
Pendleton goalkeeper Thor Case finished with five saves. Mendez had one save.
Girls soccer
UMATILLA 7, PENDLETON 0 — Evelyn Christensen and Elaina Jewett each had two goals as the Vikings defeated the visiting Bucks.
“It was a very tough start for us with some scary moments at the beginning,” Umatilla coach Edgar Navarrete said. “However, we adjusted as the first half went on, and with some final adjustments during halftime, we were able to pick things back up and set the pace for the remainder of the game.”
Also scoring for the Vikings were Ava Montiel, Shay McCallister and Yesenia Castaneda.
Pendleton mounted a furious attack during the match, but Umatilla goalkeeper EvaLynn Campos had 17 saves.
Volleyball
WESTON-MCEWEN 3, ECHO 1 — The TigerScots won their home opener with a 25-23, 25-20, 11-25, 25-21 victory over the Cougars.
“Great win tonight,” W-M coach Marie Cain said. “Proud of how the girls battled and stayed aggressive tonight. Charlotte (Hansell) was a force at the net tonight, being very aggressive and smart with her attacking.”
Hansell finished with 22 kills, 13 digs and three aces, while Addy Hall had 32 assists and 12 digs, and Bree Perkins, Megan McLouth and Brianna Romero all had seven digs.
For Echo (4-4), Gracie Putnam, Ava Davis and Sydnee Wade all had seven kills, while Hanley West had six blocks. Lilah Miller handed out 12 assists and had five aces, and Jacee Green had 21 digs. The TigerScots (6-1) will play Thursday at Pendleton, while Echo will host Nixyaawii on Wednesday for an Old Oregon League match.
