HERMISTON — Weston-McEwen sophomore Evelyn Hodgson held her own against some of the top runners in eastern Oregon and Washington, placing sixth in the girls varsity race with a time of 20:29.56 on Saturday at Melon Fest.
Callie Orcutt of West Valley (Yakima) won the race in 19:04.68, leading the Rams to the team title with 28 points. Heppner was eighth with 183, while Weston-McEwen was ninth with 228.
Hodgson ran a 10:21.67 over the first half of the race, then shaved 7 seconds off her time in the second half. Also for the TigerScots, Stella Wolf was 63rd (26:34.54), followed by Alethea Bond (76th, 27:30.21), Ashlyn Hoehna (89th, 28:46.67) and Victoria Kosirog (107th, 31:28.88).
Brooklyn Hendricks led Heppner, placing 15th with a time of 22:20.05, followed by Khloe Rodriguez (29th, 24:01.23), Mikalie Duncan (39th, 24:36.25), Cora Munkers (61st, 26:25.67) and Hailey McDaniel (98th, 29:32.46).
Mac-Hi’s Lizette Salazar was 123rd with a time of 37:23.79.
Weston-McEwen’s Arden Shaul was the top local boys runner, placing 28th with a time of 17:48.72 in a deep field featuring some of Washington’s top high school runners.
Hermiston’s Leroy Lozano Mejia won the race with an impressive time of 15:28.01. Mt. Spokane won the team title with 29 points, with Hermiston second with 56. Heppner was 10th (290), while Mac-Hi was 11th (310).
Jake Wilson led Heppner, placing 38th with a time of 18:48.63. Also for the Mustangs, Jaxson Wight was 63rd (21:49.68), followed by Frank DiSalvo (66th, 22:00.97), Tim McDonald (67th, 22:12.74) and James Campbell (23:13.81.
Also for the TigerScots, Tyler Smith was 48th (19:28.38).
Riverside’s Chase Lantis was 65th (22:00.70) to lead the Pirates, while Rafael Sepulveda was 70th (22:43.13) and Wyatt Dawson was 76th (24:13.43).
For Mac-Hi, David Barnhart led the way, placing 47th with a time of 19:18.78. He was followed by Damian Newbern (68th, 22:18), Evan McGuire Withers (69th, 22:41.78), Logan Brown (71st, 23:10.72) and Grady Brown (74th, 24:02.06).
Umatilla’s Kyan Webb, a transfer from Ione/Arlington, led the Vikings, placing 75th with a time of 24:12.42.
Volleyball
WESTON-MCEWEN WINS 2 — The TigerScots hit the road and came away with a pair of wins over Lowell and Oakland at the Lowell Tournament.
“We had our ups and downs, but they pulled together when it counted most,” W-M coach Marie Cain said. “Proud of them for taking care of business and closing both matches in three sets.”
Charlotte Hansell had 17 kills and 12 digs as the TigerScots (8-2) beat Lowell 25-22, 25-22, 25-23. Addy Hall added five kills and 12 digs, while Bree Perkins had 14 digs, Eloise Hansell five digs, four aces and three kills, Reagan Pickard seven kills, two blocks and four digs, and Kayli Choin five kills.
Against Oakland, Charlotte Hansell had 16 kills and nine digs as the TigerScots posted a 25-23, 25-14, 25-22 win.
Eloise Hansell added 16 digs, five kills and five aces, while Hall had seven digs, four kills and three aces, Perkins nine digs, Lola Hastings three kills and four digs, and Brianna Romero seven digs.
CASCADE TOURNAMENT — Pendleton finished 1-1 at the Cascade Tournament in Turner, beating Baker in three sets before falling to Sisters.
“We played well today considering we were missing senior defensive specialist McKinley Lieuallen taking the SAT, and senior outside hitter Kelsi Primus to an ankle sprain,” Pendleton coach Jodi Primus said. “We moved Braelyn Gunter from right side to outside, and we played her in the back row, as well. We also moved around our middles, so there were quite a few changes today.”
The Bucks (5-7) opened pool play with a 25-17, 25-14 win over Newport, then beat Tillamook 25-15, 25-21. In their final match, the Bucks split with Cascade Christian 25-21, 20-25.
In bracket play, Pendleton beat Greater Oregon League foe Baker 25-19, 23-25, 17-15, then dropped a 25-21, 25-16 loss to Sisters in the semifinals.
“The girls adapted well and tried some new offensive strategies out,” Primus said. “We have some things we are excited to improve upon, and we are looking forward to continuing progress and building upon our strengths.”
On the day, MJ Gomez had 42 kills, 29 digs and 46 service points, while Gunter had 33 kills and 27 digs. Caitlin Cooley handed out 86 assists and had 47 service points; McKinley Moore had 43 digs, Olivia Allen had 10 blocks, Shaylor Fisher had eight blocks and Kalia Ward had seven blocks.
Pendleton will play Tuesday at The Dalles.
