SPOKANE — Pendleton freshman Liam Pennington ran the fastest time by a Buck since 2014, when he ran 16:09.30 on Saturday at the Nike Bob Firman Invitational at The Course.
“It’s his first high school meet and he’s off to an amazing start,” Pendleton coach Maddy Naughton said.
Mick Knobel ran a 16:20.50 at the 1981 state cross country championships in Eugene. The school records are based on state performances.
The best time since Knobel’s feat was 16:21.30, run by Nolan Bylenga in 2014.
Running in the varsity Div. II race, Pennington placed eighth overall in a field of exceptional runners from Oregon, Washington and Idaho.
All of the Bucks’ top five runners posted personal bests, with sophomore Farley Hill 28th with a time of 17:02.90, followed by freshman Gabriel Rock (38th, 17:34.80), junior Eagle Edmiston (43rd, 17:43.80) and sophomore Ryan Simpson (44th, 17:43.80).
Pendleton placed fifth in the team standings with 145 points. Timberlake won the team title with 60 points, while Union was fourth with 138.
Waylon Stoneburg-Schafer of Cle-Elum-Roslyn, the 2025 Washington 2B state cross country champion, won the race in a blistering 15:27.60.
In the girls’ varsity Div. II race, Pendleton finished 12th in the team standings with 278 points.
Audrey Santman of Freeman won the race with a time of 19:01.50. Logos won the team title with 88 points.
Leading the way for Pendleton was freshman Isabella Allen, who was 28th with a time of 21:27.20. She was followed by Evelyn Hayes (46th, 22:42.70), Kimberly Tinoco (85th, 24:29.10), Seely Hemphill (87th, 24:33.40) and Kirsten Blackburn (92nd, 24:51.10).

PENDLETON 2, MADRAS 1 — The Bucks scored the game-winning goal late in the game for a nonleague home win over the White Buffalo.
“The girls are looking strong every game,” Pendleton coach Katherine Ryder said. “We did a good job playing the ball up our wings today.”
Pendleton’s Ava Jackson scored the first goal of the game in the 52nd minute only to see Madras come back to tie the score in the 64th minute.
Jackson scored the game-winner in the 78th minute as the Bucks (2-4) picked up their second win of the season.
Naomi Lopez and Rylee Jackson each had assists for Pendleton, while goalkeepers Autumn Severe and Sophia Estrada combined for five saves.
