Editorial: Uplifting the community

With COVID-19 causing emotional and mental distress perhaps as much as harming the economy and society, it is inspiring to see Nixyaawii Community School’s effort to uplift the community.

In October, NCS sponsored a virtual photo contest to recognize Indigenous Peoples Day. The winning photo, at right, was taken by Meadow Fossek-Spencer.

“Students from the new media class sponsored the contest, not specifically for the school, but for the entire community,” said Michelle Van Pelt, Career and Post Secondary Advisor. “They had talked and determined that one thing missing in the community is a sense of passion and school spirit, and it’s wonderful to see the community support their efforts.”

NCS also sponsored Halloween contests for dress-up, pumpkin-carving and house decorating. Additionally, a number of activities are planned for Native American Heritage Month during the week of Nov. 16. A short story naming the contest winners and events can be found on Page 19B.
